A few weeks ago, I learned that Canada has a Supreme Court. I mean, I knew that we had a Supreme Court in theory, but I just learned their names and saw a picture of them in their enormous red capes, like nine judges cos-playing as Mrs. Claus. The picture threw me, because this was the first time I’d really considered the highest court in Canada, and the effect that it has and can have on our laws.
Now ask me how many of the US Supreme Court justices I can name, or pick out of a lineup.
Sometimes, I get overwhelmed at how much culture, news, food, fashion, music, entertainment, etc etc etc seems imported into Canada specifically from our southern neighbours (with a ‘u’). There is a lot of culture that we share with the US. And there’s a lot that’s specific to Canada, that often gets lost in the shuffle.
That’s why I started this newsletter. It’s a chance for me to write about anything, and put a Canadian lens on it. It’ll just be me for now, but I hope to bring in other Canadian writers to share their takes soon.
I’m also a writer and journalist for a bunch of other places. You can find me on my website, or follow me on Twitter @EmilyBat to see more writing.
I hope you’ll stick around, and chime in to tell me what we should be looking at. If you like what you see, it would be great if you could share this newsletter with some friends.
Sign up now so you don’t miss the first issue. I promise I will never make some dumb ‘double double’ pun.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
